Mercury Glass Love

I have always loved mercury glass, and lucky for me, my parents let me keep all the beautiful mercury glass vases and candle holders they purchased for my wedding. I'm always pulling them out at Christmas to decorate with greenery and fresh flowers, but I love this idea of using them in a fireplace to cast a beautiful glow. Now, if only I had a fireplace!!

Burlap Stockings...

Lately I have be obsessing over adding burlap into my Christmas decor. I'm using a burlap tree skirt this year, and I've incorporated burlap ribbon into my tree topper, as well as the bow for the wreath on my front door. Oh how I wish I had a pair of burlap stockings (and a mantel) like the ones above. I love the natural, rustic look next to the beautiful Christmas greenery. I can't believe that Christmas is almost two weeks away! Have you finished your holiday decorating??

Simple Table Setting

This year, with all my family coming over to my house to celebrate Christmas, I've been searching the blogosphere and pinterest to find some inspiration for my table setting. I will be using my china (which I absolutely adore) for the first time....finally! I chose to mix a couple of patterns to get the perfect look ...

My dinner plate is Colette in gold by Robert Haviland and my salad/dessert plates are a mix of Princess Victoria and Queen Victoria by Herend. The hubs thinks Herend looks like jungle plates...but I think they are beautiful! I'd like to have place cards at the table and when I came across this image with rosemary, I fell in love...

It is simple and elegant and the rosemary makes me think of Christmas trees! Not only will it look pretty, but the table will be fragrant too. How are you setting your table this year?

Christmas is Coming!!

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is already over and that the mad dash to Christmas has begun!! Yesterday, the hubbs and I braved the rain to (beat the crowds) and pick out our Christmas tree. It is all set up and ready to be decorated...we've just got to find the time and the energy to get it done! Since we are hosting our family in our home this Christmas, I really want to get our house decked out for the season. I've been put on a tight budget, so we will see how that goes :). I'd love to use a festive paper to wrap all my gifts in this year. While, I am digging this contemporary black, white and green look from House and Home ....I think I am leaning towards a more traditional color scheme, of a sage green and white with a punch of metallic.

Anniversary

This weekend my husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary, and I just have to brag on my sweetie and the big surprise he gave me. Since we are taking a trip in February, we decided that we would keep our anniversary low key with no gifts and dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.

Well, the hubs cheated....

...and I am glad he did! He commissioned a painting from a local artist, who took a picture from our wedding day and turned it into a beautiful work of art! You can imagine my surprise at how he pulled this off without me having a clue!!

We found the perfect place for it, and every time I walk by I remember our very special wedding day and how lucky I am to be married to my best friend.

Details...part 2

I hope you are tired of my wedding already! I know I threw a lot of details your way yesterday, but like I said I am a very detail-oriented person :)....so here goes part 2....

If you know me, you know I have a HUGE sweet tooth. So not only did I have a Bride's Cake, I also needed a Groom's Cake to satisfy my love for chocolate and a pie bar...just for fun, and because it was Fall! I think the Groom's Cake turned out to be my favorite....our precious dog was carved out of chocolate...can you see her? I also loved that it looked like a tree stump...the platter we used was even an actual tree stump!!

The home where we had our reception has a long circular driveway where chandeliers were hung from trees to light the way. I have so many favorite details from the day, but this one is close to the top of the list. It truly made a statement to the entrance of our wedding reception!

Gifts were collected on the porch in this vintage goat cart for a fun twist.

I had never been to a wedding with a photo booth but had seen it on multiple blogs and just had to have one at ours! It was SO MUCH FUN!!! We had props for guests to get silly with and a chalkboard so that they could write a message to us.

If money were no object, I would have loved to have had vintage china for dinner plates and dessert plates, but I restrained myself and used them just for the bride's cake. My parents collected random china patterns from various antique stores. It was so fun to see all the different designs!

Since every detail was hugely important to me, I wanted to have some fun transportation for the day. A trolley transported the wedding party from the church to the reception....don't you just love the cute sign I made?? After much searching I found the perfect getaway car...a 1929 Model A Ford. It was perfect!! And for the grand finale...drum roll please...

I surprised my husband and our guests with fireworks when we pulled out of the driveway, and I have to say it was pretty awesome!!! So, that is the close to my most favorite day that turned into something truly better than any fairytale I could have imagined!

Details....part 1

I've always paid attention to details, so when it came to planning my wedding I spent countless hours mulling over the tiniest of details. I mean, come on, it was my wedding day.....I wanted it to be perfect!! So, here are a few of my favorite details in no particular order....

The food table became a focal point at our reception. We used lace linens from my grandparents and antiques my parents have collected over the years to make a show stopping display. I wanted to incorporate a menu somehow, so we found gorgeous vintage frames and put the name of the different dishes in each one. And we topped it all off with hanging lanterns to set the perfect glow!

I loved that our bar wrapped around a gorgeous oak tree in the center of the lawn where all the festivities were taking place. Do you notice the fabulous flower baskets mounted to the tree? The bar wouldn't be complete without our 2 specialty drinks, my favorite and of course the hubs favorite too. Oh and we had to have koozies with our wedding monogram!

I am obsessed with mercury glass so we collected vintage vases and votive candles to decorate the tables.

I love this old church pew so much that I had to incorporate it into the venue. It made the perfect seating area for guests to relax and give their dancing feet a break.

I saw this idea on a wedding blog and just had to put my spin on it. I took old photos and new photos and turned them into Polaroids to keep with my vintage theme.

We set up a guest book table on the walkway to the entrance of the home on our reception site. We used a cookbook as our guest book because we both love to cook, especially together. I loved the arbor our florist created over the entrance to the home.

The Ceremony...

I was just thinking yesterday about how this time last year I was full of anticipation for my wedding. To do lists were getting longer and longer, showers and parties were in full swing, and work was crazy stressful. As hectic as that time was, I would go back to it in a heartbeat. I have so many "favorites" from our wedding day, but the ceremony definitely takes the top spot on my list. I specifically remember every detail...I know that sounds crazy right? But, I didn't want to forget one single moment! So here comes the barrage of images....

I wanted lots of candles so my florist lined the steps to the church with candles and greenery....

Yep...more candles all across the front of the church (and in the windows)....

And here we are as Mr. and Mrs. headed to the Reception!

The Invitation....

I absolutely loved my wedding invitation. As you can see I definitely went the traditional route, but what I love is that I had the invitation designed by a local calligrapher to make it unique to my groom and me. Every loop and swirl was thought about in detail and it came out beautifully. I wanted to add a little something special to the invitation so instead of the typical tissue that accompanies an invitation like this, we used vellum that had a gorgeous cross designed by our calligrapher in the middle. It is kind of hard to show that in a photograph, so you will just have to take my word for it that it was pretty fabulous! Also, the cross appeared on the stamp on the outside of the envelope. I have a few leftover and love to use them for special letters I mail.

If you have been reading my blog for awhile now you probably gave up hope of me ever posting pictures from my wedding or either you forgot altogether that I got married last November! It is about time I share some pictures, right?!! For those of you who don't know, I started working for Celebrate magazine in March and was asked by the Editor if I would share my wedding with our readers. Um, hello, YES I would LOVE to share MY wedding!!!!! So, our fall issue just came out complete with my wedding pictures and the story of our big day written by yours truly. Now, that was a challenge! How do you fit everything you have to say about the greatest day ever in just a few short pages??? I managed to squeeze a lot of it in, but figured I could go into more details here on my blog. Quick, Easy and Delicious!

I'm always looking for a quick, easy and delicious appetizer to make for those last minute gatherings with friends. I came across this delightful recipe on Sweet Paul's blog and I have to say I was not disappointed...nor were my friends. All of them were wanting the recipe at the end of the night! So, I thought I would share with you too...

Lemon and feta dip
Serves 4

8oz feta cheese, crumbled
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 clove garlic, chopped
6 tablespoons olive oil+ extra for serving
fresh thyme

Place feta, lemon zest and juice, garlic and olive oil in a blender and blend until smooth.
Spoon into a bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil and sprinkle with thyme.
Serve with grilled tomatoes and grilled pita bread drizzled with olive oil, salt and thyme.

In Need of an Update....

My den is in MAJOR need of an update. I have been so neglectful of that space lately...well, really of my entire house. Life has gotten in the way and decorating just hasn't been a priority. I'm no expert when it comes to picking out fabric, arranging furniture, etc, so I guess I've just been paralyzed by the fear of making a wrong choice and regretting it. Over the weekend I breezed into Restoration Hardware to pick up a gift and I spotted this rustic yet chic burlap pillow. I knew it would look perfect on my couch and could possibly be the good start I need to some much needed updating....

I could have stayed in Restoration Hardware for hours and hours....it is the most beautiful, relaxing store...and I want everything in it....

I am totally digging this inspiration board from Camille Styles! A) Because I love all of Camille's party inspiration...you must check out her blog and B) I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cinco de Mayo!!

My hubby and I have been whipping up margaritas a lot recently. I don't know if it is his Texas roots, my obsession with mexican food or the warm weather coming, but we just can't seem to get enough of that delicious cocktail. Here is our recipe (makes two cocktails) ....

Mix the following ingredients into a cocktail shaker:

Ice
2 shots of Tequila
1 shot of Grand Marnier (or Cointreau)

Shake and then pour into two cocktail glasses with ice. Add 1/2 shot of orange juice and 1/2 shot of lime juice to each glass....maybe more depending on how strong you like your drink! And of course, don't forget to garnish with salt and a lime wedge.

I apologize for my lack of posts this week but if you have been following the news you've probably heard of the terrible devastation in Alabama due to the tornadoes that hit yesterday. Thankfully my family and friends are safe and did not experience any damage to their homes, but several Alabamians did and the images are just unbelievable. My prayers go out to all who have experienced loss due to this horrible storm.

I hate to leave this post on such a depressing note, so one thing I am happy about right now is that the Royal Wedding is tomorrow!! My DVR is set so that I can watch this very happy occasion unfold when I wake up! Our Headboard DIY

Ok, so I have to admit I am the worst blogger when it comes to documenting my DIY projects. I start the project and then halfway through I think, wait I need to be taking pictures! Therefore, I don't have a good photo of my hubby cutting the plywood into the pattern we chose, nor do I have him mounting the foam to the headboard with adhesive spray. But, as you can see I have him wrapping the batting around the headboard and securing it with staples. Once it was time for the fabric I got involved!! I helped him wrap the headboard in our fabric...which turned out more challenging than I thought. The edges that are cut out on the top corners were harder to get smooth, but we persevered and made it happen. It is a good thing we didn't go with one of the more intricate patterns in my post yesterday. Another part of the project that I let the hubby handle was attaching the headboard to the wall. I have no patience for measuring, finding studs and using levels. He did a great job though! I'm trying to decide if we should add nail heads. I love nail head trim! What do you think???

Hello deliciousness!! This sweet treat has me dreaming of Easter egg hunts and spring weather. Its been a crazy week down here in Bama. Cold rainy weather has been dampening my spirits, but sunshine is on the horizon this weekend! My DIY Cake Bunting...

Cake Bunting Obsession and a Birthday

Today is my hubby's birthday, and a couple of weeks ago I got a request from him to make the yummy chocolate cake I baked for my dad's birthday. Of course I said yes, so cakes have been dancing in my head the last few days. Since it is his birthday, I really want to dress the cake up a little bit and lately I've become obsessed with the cake bunting I have seen all over the blogosphere.

I can't sew so was a little worried about how I was going to accomplish this bunting project, but then I saw this DIY break down on Somewhere Splendid and I knew I would be able to get this done!!

Luckily my hubby agreed that it would be best to make the cake this weekend. I was a little concerned I wouldn't be able to pull off working full time, making a delicious dinner and a homemade cake! I will be sure to post pictures of how it all turns out!!

I have always been (and probably will always be) pretty traditional when it comes to decorating or collecting entertaining pieces, but I really need to break out of my conservative shell and add some vibrant statement making pieces to my collection. You only live once....right?

Ok, so not only is this post a day late, but I am sure you have noticed my lack of blogging over the last few weeks, and I promise I have a good excuse!! Yes, I admit I have been a total blog slacker! The last few months I have been on a job search and in the last few weeks lots of good things have happened! If you have been reading my blog for awhile now, you know that I've been in the process of redecorating my husband's house. We've been married for 3 months, so I guess I should have the hang of saying "our" house by now! One of the things I am DYING to replace is the awful chandelier in our dining room. It just does nothing for the space...but, maybe take it down a notch in looks. I have had my heart set on finding a lantern, and when my friend Marianne sent this photo to me, I totally fell in love!

Now if only I could get my husband to fall in love with that price tag!

I know Valentine's Day has come and gone, but I just couldn't help but share this fabulous floral arrangement. I am pretty crazy about the alphabet mugs from Anthropologie...I bought myself one a few weeks ago to hold pens in my home office. But, I just L-O-V-E this use for them! I can totally see this at a wedding/wedding shower or a Valentine's party. The more creative the vase...the more "stand out" the floral arrangement can be!

I knew when my husband told me he was taking care of dinner for Valentine's Day that I was in store for something good. He is fabulous in the kitchen, and yes...I do know how LUCKY I am to have a husband who cooks. Over the weekend he had me fooled that he was going to be grilling steaks for our Valentine's Dinner, so you can imagine my surprise when I walked into our kitchen to find all the fixings for homemade sushi! We had been talking about picking up a sushi kit for some time know, but had just never gotten around to it....until now....

It was actually a lot easier to make sushi than I thought, but I guess that is easy for me to say since I didn't make the rice! Perhaps I should say ASSEMBLING the sushi was easy and fun :)!

All you have to do is....

1. Put a layer down of rice on the sushi mat

2. Add nori on top

3. Add your fixings

4. And start rolling!

Our sushi definitely would not win an award for best looking, but our rolls were really delicious! So if you are thinking about taking the plunge and making sushi at home, I highly recommend it!!

Not only do a love a great gift, but I am crazy about stylish packaging. I've always saved beautiful boxes and gorgeous ribbon....I know it sounds silly, but I just can't help it! Taking time to wrap a gift in a meaningful way...(for example, the heart wax paper for the delicious Valentine's treats)...really sets your gift apart from the rest! I don't know about you but creative wrapping will win me over every time...

Beat the Winter Blues

During the cold winter months it is easy to hibernate, but the best way to beat the winter blues is to cozy up next to the fire with good friends and a delicious meal. Trade in your flannel pj's for a party dress and invite friends over for dinner. The best advice for entertaining good friends is to keep it simple. Your guests would much rather you be present for the lively conversation than tied up in the kitchen. Make what you can in advance so you can remain stress free when your company arrives. For cold winter months, chili is a great option. Who doesn't love a meal that will warm them up when the temperature is dropping outside? Add a twist to your traditional chili by incorporating southwest flavors and dark ale. This is a recipe that will surely have your guests asking for a second helping...

Fireside Chili

Ingredients

3 tablespoons olive oil
2 pounds ground beef
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 large red onion, finely diced
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 bottle dark beer
2 ½ cups chicken stock
1 16oz can diced tomatoes
1 tablespoon honey
1 cup kidney beans
1 cup black beans
2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice

Garnish

¼ cup green onions, chopped
¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese
Toasted Cumin Sour Cream (recipe below)

Directions

Heat the oil in a large soup pot over high heat. Add the ground beef and sauté until browned. Transfer the meat to a plate and drain excess grease. Add the onions to the pan and cook until soft (About 8 minutes). Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes (be careful not to let the garlic burn). Add the chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper. Add the beer and cook until the beer is completely reduced. Return the beef to the pot, add the chicken stock, tomatoes, honey, and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to medium, cover the pan, and simmer for 45 minutes. Stir in the beans and continue cooking for 15 minutes. Taste the chili and add salt or pepper to fit your taste. Remove from the heat.

Toasted Cumin Sour Cream:

1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 cup sour cream
¼ teaspoon lime juice
Salt and pepper to taste

Place the cumin in a small sauté pan over medium heat and toast until lightly golden brown. In a small bowl, combine the toasted cumin, sour cream, lime juice. Stir the mixture until creamy and season with salt and pepper.

Your chili will not only taste delicious, but it will look fabulous in a classic white bowl. The focus will be on the pops of flavor in the chili, and not on the color or pattern of your dinnerware. This "chili" bowl from Crate and Barrel is perfect for serving your guests.

The last detail to take care of for your dinner party is the table. Instead of using flowers for your centerpiece, put a couple of candles in a shallow dish filled with dried beans. Not only does this centerpiece save you time and money, but it looks super chic. In addition, the candles will provide the perfect ambiance for this cozy winter meal.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I can't seem to get sweets off my mind! Usually I associate Valentine's Day with the traditional box of chocolates, but it is time for me to step "outside the box" and think more creatively when it comes to celebrating this special day. These heart shaped red velvet whoopie pies could not be more perfect! I love the addition of red and white baker's twine to wrap up the whoopie pies into a sweet little package. This is definitely a Valentine's gift I would love to receive!

I am dying over these "milkshake" cupcakes!! Can cupcakes get much cuter than this?? I am pretty obsessed with striped paper straws too, so naturally I fell in love with this adorable idea. The "fudge sauce", sprinkles and "cherry" on top make this milkshake just perfect!

Perhaps you want to combine your milkshake with a burger? Not only do I love the burger on top of this cupcake, but I am crazy about the cupcake liner! The red and white check looks just like the paper you would see lining a basket of burger and fries at burger joint. Very clever!!

Birthday Wish List....

Yep...that's right...my birthday is coming up! And, this year its kind of a big deal. I'm entering a new decade (insert groan here). Um, so where did my twenties go? Wasn't I just graduating from college and getting my first job like yesterday?? I'm typically a totally obnoxious birthday freak. You know the type....I'm that girl who likes to celebrate all WEEK (but really all month would do too)...but this year things are a little different. I keep wanting to forget that I am turning 30...I keep wanting to pretend that its not January and that I am NOT getting older. Regardless, its coming, so I thought I would put together a little wish list. Probably too late for the hubby, but hopefully if he is smart he will think about using these ideas in the future for other special occasions.

I'm one of those who has been holding out for the i phone to come to Verizon and its almost here! (Just in time for a "belated" birthday gift to moi in February!)

I've had my eye on this David Yurman ring for awhile...and will probably have to keep having my eye on it for awhile. I'm sure my hubby is tired of buying me diamond rings right now!

Ok, so the first two are pretty big wishes, so let me drop back down to earth with some more realistic wishes. I LOVE LOVE LOVE candles...especially this one from Votivo. Right now my candle collection is down to zero!!

I've really been on a kick lately of trying out new recipes, but I haven't done much branching out past Barefoot Contessa (I love her!!). I think my hubby would love for me to change it up, and I have been dying to pick up a copy of this southern girl's cookbook!

My Dad's 65th Birthday Party

At the beginning of January, my hubby and I hosted a family dinner to celebrate my dad's 65th birthday. It was our first time to have my whole family over for dinner since the wedding and we had a blast! My hubby is quite the chef, and I'm not too bad myself so we decided to whip up a delicious dinner.

The menu:

Pork Tenderloin

Boursin Mashed Potatoes

Snap Peas with Pancetta (we served them warm)

Homemade Chocolate Cake

Homemade Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

My hubby was in charge of the pork tenderloin and the ice cream so I don't have those recipes handy unfortunately. My sister helped out by bringing the boursin mashed potatoes, which is a recipe that my hubby and I created together. Its super easy and one we love to make. Simply make mashed potatoes (combine cooked potatoes with butter, milk, salt and pepper) and then add in boursin cheese. Even my 5 year old nephew is a big fan! So, of course when I got busy in the kitchen I completely forgot to take pictures of the food to show you, and there was not much left after the party!! I did however snap a few pics of my table set up. I decided to go casual with place mats from Pottery Barn and my white berry and thread Juliska dinner plates. I added a little bit of flair by alternating plain white napkins and white napkins with greenery embroidered. I also thought it would be fun to drink out of our new William Yeoward crystal glasses!

Since my hubby now has me on a budget with all my party planning, I went for a simple floral arrangement displayed in a fun modern vase. I think the total cost was about $3...not too bad!!

I came across this quote in my blog surfing and it really jumped out at me. I'm currently trying to figure out my career path and its definitely been an emotional process. I am torn between the practical side of me who is telling me to get a good, stable job and the creative side of me who is dying to take a risk...to do something unpredictable...something, well, more creative. I think I know what makes me come alive....but can I do it successfully and earn a living? Will I be happy or will it start to feel like work? And so the questions keep on going and the emotions keep on turning and I am left wondering what oh what to do. For less than $200 I had both of my wing back chairs recovered...too bad the fabric wasn't that cheap! I am really pleased with how they turned out and am hoping to add a pillow to each to complete the look....what do you think?

I inherited two wing back chairs from my grandparents...which I am sure you could guess by the look of the fabric! I wonder what my grandkids will think one day of my decorating style? So, needless to say...these babies needed to get recovered!!

I came across an article a few years ago in Cottage Living of a living room redo, and ever since then I have not stopped thinking about the fabric used on two chairs in the room. #1 I LOVED the color...neutral, but definitely not boring....and #2 I was crazy about the texture of the fabric - velvet!!

I started to wonder if it would be possible for this fabric to look good on my chairs and also if the fabric would blend with the other colors in my living room? Luckily, when I brought a sample home, I saw that the "Aloe" fabric picked up the same color in my oriental rug and blended perfectly with the colors in the paintings hung on my walls!! So after several months of waiting in line (my upholster guy stays very busy) for my chairs to be recovered, I finally have them back home....stay tuned tomorrow to see the new look!

A new beginning....

I can't believe that 2010 has come and gone! It was a big year for me.....

I planned my dream wedding

I sold my house

I got married on the most perfect day to my most perfect mate

I traveled to the most amazing island for the most amazing week

I moved into a new house

I accomplished a goal at work that most thought was impossible

and I celebrated the last year of my twenties...

I typically make New Year's Resolutions, but I think half way through the year they are forgotten and most likely never accomplished. This year I hope to be different....I hope to....

1. Pursue My Passions. I am going to stop ignoring my passions. I'm almost 30 (yikes) and its about time that I start to embrace them and find a way to possibly earn a living doing them!
2. Travel More. Time seems to fly these days and I want to take every opportunity I have to travel somewhere new and different...because before I know it I will have a family and jet setting here and there will be a lot more difficult!
3. Give Back. I am so thankful for the many ways I have been blessed over the last 29 years. I want to make a conscious effort to do more to give back. I have realized over the years when I volunteer my time or my money that giving is so much more rewarding than receiving.

The Full View

A few friends told me that they were disappointed that I did not show the full view of my dining room in my "after" photos from earlier this week. So, here you go ladies....

My dining room is pretty small making it hard to get a great picture of the whole room, so I took photos from a few different angles. The china cabinet is painted...the chairs and bench are recovered....now onto the chandelier! I really wish I could find a fabulous one for under $300...but that may be asking too much. Oh how I wish I could get over to Scott's Market in Atlanta...I just know I could find something there!

Introducing my new fabulous bench....

I think this fun/funky design is much better than the original grandma floral print. For less than $12 I was able to recover the bench myself! Wahoo...gotta love a cheap upgrade! What is even better is that my hubby actually likes the fabric and was really into me making the change. Normally he thinks home decorating is not essential. What does he know??!!

The new fabric coordinates perfectly with my updated dining room chairs and china cabinet. You may remember my dining room chair project from September. I am so glad to have my chairs and bench updated. Now all I need to do is find a new chandelier! Any suggestions on where to look??

So, I've really been working on my house a lot lately since I now have all this free time from no longer having to plan my wedding...ha! I found a bench for my dining room table to add some extra seating since I only have 4 chairs. I just love the look of mixing something different with my traditional dining room chairs...what I don't love is the fabric that was on the bench. It took me a while to finally find the perfect fabric, but it was definitely worth the wait...

It's a little late...

...for some holiday inspiration...but I just couldn't help myself! I have been so behind this Christmas, which I like to blame on the fact that I got married in mid-November. I know it sounds crazy since that was over a month ago, but I honestly have not been able to get completely organized since we have been back from our honeymoon. I've been distracted with getting settled in my "new" home, thank you notes, and most importantly looking for a new job! BUT, I couldn't let the holiday season come and go without an inspiration board...not matter how close it is to Christmas. Just tuck it away in your files for next year....

I didn't even know my wish for this boot existed until sweet Caroline posted about the Frye Deborah Pull On last week. Now I can't stop thinking about this FABULOUS boot! Wouldn't they be so perfect for my trips out to Texas to visit the in-laws? My hubby has been wanting to get me a pair of cowboy boots, but unfortunately I think these might be a little bit out of his price range. Why do I always like everything that is expensive...WHY!??! I guess for now I will just have to keep wishing away....

Cookie Swap 2010

Tonight I am going to a cookie swap that a few of my good friends host every Christmas season. Every year, I have big ambitions to research fabulous Christmas cookie recipes to find the perfect cookie to bake. This plan doesn't always pan out well...one year I tried a recipe from Real Simple and I don't know if it was me or the recipe, but those cookies were a whole lot of work!! So, this year I bagged my big ambitions and went with a SUPER easy, yet totally delicious recipe that I got from my cousin Laura. When I was her roommate just a few months ago I walked into the kitchen and found little bites of heaven on a cooling rack. She of course offered for me to try one and that was a BIG mistake. I couldn't stop!! I had to get out of the kitchen and quick or I would have eaten all her cookies. So, to me, that is the perfect cookie to bring to a swap...one that is easy and delicious! Dying to hear the recipe? Ok, here it is....

1 box of butter cake mix

1 bag of chocolate chips

1 bag of heath/toffee pieces

2 eggs

1/2 cup of vegetable oil

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well....

Spoon cookie dough on an ungreased cookie sheet...

And then pop in a 350 degree oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden....

Pretty easy huh? I am certain they will be a big hit!! What is your favorite cookie recipe?

....from Lonny. I know you've probably all seen the December Lonny issue, but I just had to post this rustic holiday tablescape....because, well, you know how much I love anything that is rustic!! I like the idea of the lamps on the table instead of candles...wax won't drip and you don't have to worry about making sure your candles fit perfectly into your candlesticks (which they never do).

I have to say this chic holiday table in Lonny's December issue totally blows away my simple table from yesterday's post!! I love the modern twist on a seasonal spread. This table has me wanting to think more "outside of the box" the next time I host a dinner party. Polka dot napkins and a confetti table cloth...why not!!???

Holiday Supper Club

I hosted my supper club last week for our annual ornament swap Christmas party and wanted to share with you my table...

As you may remember from earlier posts, I decided to use a lot of mercury glass in my holiday decor, so of course I carried that theme over to the dining room table with mercury glass votives. I always love candlelight on a table! My sister and brother-in-law gave the hubby and me a gorgeous Fortunata bowl that you can see in the center of our table. I filled it with silver ball ornaments, pinecones, Christmas tree branches and red berries. Instead of using white flowers which I originally had in mind, I decided to juxtapose rustic elements (the pinecones, berries, etc.) with the mercury glass, and I think it turned out great! I love how the red berries added a much needed pop of color to the table.

Here is an up close shot of the place settings. I used a Juliska pewter charger with a white berry and thread Juliska dinner plate. My friend Kate gave us the FABULOUS cream napkins with pewter dots that couldn't be more perfect for this set up!! Luckily I found some old napkin rings in my kitchen drawer that blended well. That is definitely something on my list that I need. I'm thinking maybe some Simon Pearce? I think the glass would go with just about any look.

In the middle....and...After

I couldn't just post an "After" picture of my china cabinet without documenting the "Middle," which took lots of time and effort....even with the extra hands from my sweet hubby. He came to my rescue several times during the paint job when I wanted to throw the paint brush out the window!

Drum roll please...................................................................................!!!

And, here you have the "After." I hate that my photography is so terrible. You can barely tell that the china cabinet is a different color from the wall, but I promise it is! Wall paint is ballet white by Benjamin Moore and the china cabinet paint is Blue Gray by Farrow and Ball. I swear it looks FAB in person :)

Here is a close up of the top portion that shows off more of my Christmas decor...mercury glass combined with Christmas tree branches and red berries.

My favorite thing about this china cabinet? Well, it was a wedding gift to my grandparents over 70 years ago! Three paint jobs later, a new city, another wedding and one more couple who lives happily ever after...
